Mariam Jameel Alassi, 37, is a married mother of four children between the ages of 10 and 16. Her husband, Raed, is the family’s only provider, but they lost their source of income during the genocide and now struggle to cover basic needs such as food, water, and medicine. Mariam and her family have been displaced twice, and they are currently staying in her sister-in-law’s home after she left for Egypt, while their own home was completely destroyed and is now located behind the yellow line. There has been no soup kitchen in their area since July 2025, and over the past three years they have received only three WFP aid packages. Water is distributed about 200 meters from their home, so the family has to carry heavy gallons back themselves. Mariam’s children are all in school, and despite the difficulty, she has managed to register them, but their education costs around $100 per child each month, in addition to books, school supplies, and clothing. Mariam is also studying management at university, which costs about $700 a year. Her husband has displaced discs in his back and often needs painkillers, making it difficult for him to do the physical work required to support the family. Mariam, her husband, and one of their daughters also need dental treatment that they cannot afford. They currently have no stable source of income and are relying on donations to help cover their family’s basic needs and education.
